The group is focused on the young person who has a brother or sister with an additional need. From experience, siblings do an amazing job in support their brother or sister’s additional need, and there is often anxiety, questions, worries etc around this.
The group is for children and young people 7 years and above.
What do the sessions involve?
Each session is really positive and based on fun activities and it will allow the young person to discuss their fears but also celebrate their skills and current coping strategies and support them in creating further ones.
The session will be run alongside the SEND youth club.
The aims of the group are:
To reduce isolation for young people and allow them to recognise that they aren’t alone
To meet others who share similar experiences of brother or sister’s difficulties and how they can affect everyday family life.
To ‘normalise’ some of their anxieties and feelings
Celebrate their skills and current coping strategies and support them in creating further ones
Who are the sessions run by?
I am a trained counsellor, qualified personal life coach and in a previous life was a primary teacher, so I have lots of experience working in this area and all helpers are SIB’s trained and like me, hold a current Advanced DBS.
What charities can support brothers and sisters of disabled children & adults?
Your usual doctor may be part-time, on leave or involved in administrative matters . You can help us. Remember to book ahead for routine things - like you would for dental check ups or a service for your car. Urgent cases or emergencies will be rung back and assessed on the phone and seen by appointment if needed. Please try to stay away from A&E unless you have a life threatening “999” emergency. Remember that your local pharmacy or 111 can often help too. The Pharmacy is able to provide help and advice on ‘minor’ illness such as coughs, colds and flu-like symptoms.
